XIPHINEMA

Claire Sinsley

I am a painter, designer, and mixed media artist who makes abstract paintings, drawings, and artist books. I am influenced by social commentators and philosophers such as Byung-Chul Han and Matthew Lysiak, the artists Gao Hang and Joshua Hagler, my work as a personal trainer, and the online fitness community. My work explores the intersections of science, health, humanity and politics through the lens of nutrition, fitness, and living in a post-internet society. The corruption, contradiction, and divisions within these niche subjects allow me to comment on bigger ideas surrounding humanity’s desire for control and our failures within communication. My work is busy, partially abstract, and saturated. I intend for my audience  to pull bits and pieces of recognizable subject matter from my work in order to provoke conversation around these controversial wellness spaces and suggest a larger critique of extremism, the loss of community, and the rise of distrust and misinformation. As I react to my environment and experience through my work, I hope viewers will recognize and respond to the ways in which these trends mirror society as a whole.
